My School Story
The bright sun shining in my window and the soft sway of our house boat on the Potomac River slowly awakens me from my deep sleep. I lay in bed for a while as I rub the sleep from my eyes. I hear my mother in the kitchen and smell bacon and burnt toast (my mom isn’t the best cook!).
“Abby!” She calls, “Time for school!”
“Ugg,” I groan. I pull the covers over my head, dreading the day before me. The first day of school! It wouldn’t be that bad but it’s my first day at a new school! Also, I am starting 7th grade! It would be one thing if I was starting 6th grade and everyone was new…But I’m not. Plus, to add to my long list of problems, I am super shy. I’ll never make friends. After all, in California I only had 1 friend, Meg, even after almost 10 years of trying. This year was sure to be torture!
"Abigail Walker, you better be done here in 5 minutes!” I hear my mom yell.
I take a minute more to finishing moping around, then I climb out of bed, open my creaky dresser, and pull on jean shorts and and my favorite sky blue tee. I rake a comb through my honey-blonde hair and slip on my simple glasses over my green eyes. I try to cover my terrible freckles and sunburn with so makeup (no such luck!). When I get to the kitchen my mother smiles her perfect smile.
"You"ll love your new school!" She says enthusiastically.
"Yeah right!" I snap. I swallow a dry piece of toast and wash it down with some orange juice. After I finish eating, I brush my teeth then stomp back to the kitchen. I gather all my school things and put them in my book bag.
"Bye Mom! Love you!" I say as I leave.
"Bye! See you after school!" She calls back to me.
I slowly walk to school not wanting to draw attention to myself. When I get to Potomac Middle School I head to the main office. Mr. Murphy gives me my schedule, locker number, locker combination, and then leaves me to fend to myself. The butterflies in my stomach turn to nausea and I think that I might be sick. I feel people staring at me as I walk to my locker. My combination isn't working and I am about to go back to the office when a girl taps me on the shoulder.
"Why are you trying to open my locker?" She asks.
I flush scarlet red! I feel my face heat up. I was trying to open locker 357 instead of locker 368!
"Oh, sorry!" I whisper.
"It's OK. I'm Alice by the way." She shakes my hand.
"I'm Abby." I whisper again.
"You're new aren't you?" Alice asks. I just nod in return.
"Cool," She says. Alice takes a look at my schedule. "Oh, you have Mr. Banker for science! Lucky! He is so awesome. His class is room A125. Just take a left down this hall, then look on the right side of the hallway. You'll see it."
"Thanks!" I say in a slightly louder voice.
"Any time," Alice says "Gotta go, see you around!"
I find the science room easily, just like Alice said I would. Mr. Banker let me sit in the back so that no one stared at me and he didn't make me introduce myself so I didn't care if he was cool or not.
All my classes went OK and my butterflies were starting to go away when it was time for lunch. I walked into the cafeteria and I felt dozens of people staring at me. I heard whispers and giggling. I started to shake and my stomach was turning. My palms got sweaty. I was just about to run in the other direction when I heard someone call my name. I looked over and saw Alice waving at me.
"Abby! Over here!" She yelled.
Suddenly I was glad I had tried to open her locker. I ran to her table so fast I nearly tripped. Alice introduced me to all her friends but I practically forgot their names as soon as I heard them. I am still to nervous to talk so I just listen to them talk and talk... and talk.
After lunch is over the butterflies return. My only teacher that makes me introduce my self was my history teacher. I tried to talk but I lost all ability to communicate with other humans. Gym was a complete NIGHTMARE! We were doing basketball. I am so bad at basketball! When I was dribbling I missed the ball and it hit me in the nose causing a major nosebleed.
My other classes were good though! I had math and english with Alice so it wasn't to bad. Plus, I impressed the math teacher by getting an A+ on a test that I didn't have a chance to study for. Also, at the end of the day I opened the right locker! I went over to Alice's house too! The day was actually fun!
The next day the bright sun shining through my window and the soft sway of our tiny house boat in the Potomac River awakens me from my deep sleep.
"Abby!" My Mom calls, "Time for school!"
Today I jump out of bed excited for my second day of school!
