The Prince and The Pauper By: Mark Twain

Question: What is the problem in the story? Is there more than one problem?
Answer: The problem in The Prince and The Pauper is that Prince Edward of England and Tom Canty (the poor pauper) have switched places. It all happened when Tom Canty wanted to see a prince. He went to the palace gates and a guard hit him. Edward got mad at the guard. Edward took Tom to his room and they saw that they looked identical. They switched clothes. Edward saw that the guard hurt Tom, so Edward went to go yell at the guard, but since he looked like a pauper, he got thrown out. Meanwhile, everyone is treating Tom like royalty.

Question: How do the characters change through out the story?
Answer: Tom Canty changes a lot during the story. In the beginning of the book he wants to be a prince. Then when he does become a prince he just wants to go home. He misses his mother and sisters, Nan and Bet. Then later he becomes more comfortable with being watched all the time and being royal. Then at the very end of the book he sees his mother and she recognizes him, then he wants to go home again.

Question: Do you think the characters dealt well or poorly with the problems in the story? How would you have dealt with them?
Answer: I think that Edward should not have acted the way he did. He kept saying that he was king and everyone thought that he was crazy. If I was Edward, I would have pretended to be Tom Canty and then I would make up a story so I could go to the palace. Then I would have snuck in and switched back with Tom. I might have gotten less attention.

Question: If you could add another character to the story who would you add? Would the addition of this character affect the plot?
Answer: I would have added another person who lived in the castle and knew that Tom Canty was pretending to be Edward. That person could be Lady Elizabeth or someone else already working in the castle. This person might have shortened the book by telling someone about the switch. They might have even gone looking for Edward. Maybe, he or she would become friends with Tom and try to get him home. Either way, the plot would change.

Question: What emotions did you see as you read the story? How did the author reveal these emotions to you?
Answer: An emotion I saw was that Tom Canty was sad to be prince because he missed his family. Edward was upset and mad that he was thrown into the streets like a pauper. Mark Twain tells you about the emotions by using dialogue, thoughts, and the characters actions. He also tells you that Edward wants to be king because he is telling everyone that he is king.

Question: How does the author establish the setting? (How do you know about the setting?)
Answer: I know that the setting is in England because all the characters spoke old English. I also know because they had kings, queens, princes, princess, lords, and ladies. Also, whenever the characters wanted to go to a certain city they would name the city.
